They sit nestled between high mountain peaks, in clearings in the bush, alongside clear running streams, hidden in dark places overshadowed by the forest canopy. All are back country huts. Far from the mainstream, most accessible only on foot or by helicopter.
Some of them started life as musterers' huts, as accommodation for government hunters, as overnight shelters for trampers. Many were built by different government departments over the years, some by tramping clubs and hunting clubs yet others by persons unknown. They range from structures no bigger than a dog kennel to multi-roomed mansions with all modern conveniences. Each has its own history and unique character.
They have on occasion saved lives by their very existence. They provided shelter and safety to many thousands of users each year, from solitary hunters and trampers to organised parties of bush walkers and tourists. They allow thousands to experience the diversity of the New Zealand bush, coast and mountains at minimal coast.
This book is a celebration of the North Island's back country huts, their diversity and character, for all lovers of the outdoors.
